What would you do if you felt more confident?
Maybe you would finally go for that promotion that you know you deserve?
Or enjoy the job you’re in more instead of feeling like you’re not good enough and constantly comparing yourself to others?
Perhaps you would start that business you’ve been dreaming about?
Or maybe you already have that business but instead of being scared to show up you would
have the confidence shout about it?
Whatever the goal, if your lack of confidence is holding you back from the life you want to be living, keep reading because I’m about to share with you some ways that you can build lasting inner confidence and thrive personally and professionally.
First things first, what is confidence?
Confidence is not…
Being the loudest person in the room
Changing/ hiding parts of yourself
Thinking you're better than anyone else or even feeling the need to compare.
Confidence is…
Putting yourself out there as your authentic self
Knowing you are enough as you are
Accepting and coming home to yourself.
How do we feel more confident?
Through both my self-development journey and supporting my clients with theirs, I have learnt many different tools and techniques that can help with boosting confidence.
Today I want to share 3 that I feel are applicable for anyone, at any stage looking to achieve any confidence goal that will ;
Make the most impact ✅
Create lasting change ✅
Get you the results you want ✅
TRAIN YOUR BRAIN
By this I mean create a helpful Reticular Activating System. Don’t worry, it’s much simpler than it sounds and I’ve recorded a short audio guide (less than 5 minutes) explaining exactly how you can do this here
CONTROL YOUR INNER CRITIC
The starting point for this is changing the way you talk to yourself. By learning the create more helpful thoughts, you create more helpful feelings, which in turn create better actions which ultimately lead to better results.
Here’s how:
Step 1 - Become aware of your thoughts.
Step 2 - Acknowledge that thoughts are not facts.
Step 3 - Ask yourself what these beliefs are costing you.
Step 4 - Retrain your brain!
Here’s an article I wrote that breaks down how to do this in more detail https://drive.google.com/file/d/10z4Cul7vKvAP8wRvL0k357Or72SVYrSV/view
DO THE THING (OR A VERSION OF IT).
Confidence is like a muscle, the more you use it, the bigger and stronger it gets. A mistake most people make is thinking that they have to wait until they feel confident to take action but it’s the actual action itself that will bring you confidence. For example, if you want to be confident at riding a bike, you won’t suddenly wake up one day confidently being able to cycle. Confident cycling comes from taking action, getting on the bike, being a bit wobbly, potentially falling off and going again until you get it. If you feel your goal is too big, break it down and do a version of it. For example, I had a client recently who wanted to be a more confident communicator. She started by just showing up at the meetings in which she wanted to contribute, she then built up to ask a question, then answer a question and then cover a section of the meeting. The key is to start small, but make sure you start.
I want confidence - what next?
I hope that this article has been insightful in helping you to adopt some strategies that you can implement to help you build lasting inner confidence.
You deserve to feel confident and capable and believe in yourself instead of sitting on the sidelines watching others be brave enough to go after what you know deep down that you deserve.
