Get started with self-development in 7 simple steps

Let me get straight to the point- I’m OBSESSED with Self-development and you should be too. As you’re here, I’m guessing that you’re interested in learning more about this life-changing topic so let’s jump right in.

So what even is Self-development?

Wikipedia defines Self-development or Personal Development as;

“Activities that develop a person's capabilities and potential, build human capital, facilitate employability, and enhance quality of life and the realisation of dreams and aspirations”.

Self-development can be described as many things, but essentially, it’s about raising your self-awareness so you can better understand who you are and what makes you happy. You can then, through various tools and activities, develop yourself to be able to achieve the things you want to achieve- your goals and dreams.

Ok, so why bother with Self-development?

Ultimately, self-development and its results can:

✔️ Enhance your quality of life

✔️ Increase your happiness

✔️ Improve your relationships with yourself and others.

✔️ Boost your self-esteem and confidence

✔️ Accelerate your career success

See why I love it so much?!

Self-development changes lives

It changed mine - you can read about that here

Without it, I’m pretty sure that I would still be living out my own personal Groundhog Day, frazzled and frustrated limping along to my next annual leave with no energy left over for the things that mattered to me.

But I did discover the power of Self-development and it’s helped me to completely turn my life around now I get to wake up every day excited to do what I love and get paid for it!

I’m not telling you this to show off or to make you feel bad, I’m telling you because I want to help you get the same for you too ❤️

How do I get started with Self-development?

There are loads of things that you could do but listing them all would take all day and you would end up more overwhelmed than you already are!

Instead here are 7 simple steps that can get you started with Self-development.

These steps have helped me and the many women I’ve supported through my 1:1 Self-development Coaching.

1. Get intentional

What do you REALLY want out of life? Forget what you think you ‘should’ do or what other people want for you. This is your life. You’ve only got one shot at it. If you are not intentional in the way you live your life by identifying what you want to achieve and creating an actionable strategy to get you there, before you know it, that life will have whizzed by and you will be full of regrets about what could have been.

2. Increase your self-awareness through journaling

We carry so many thoughts in our minds at one time, and holding onto them all can result in overthinking and inaction. Just 5 minutes of journaling can move you from feeling panicked with a head full of jumbled thoughts to a place of calm. It’s such a great free and easy way to help you to get all of those thoughts onto paper for you to see more clearly and process rationally. If you would like some personalised journal prompts to help you with your goal you can send me an email leanne@youfirstcoach.co.uk and I will reply with some for you 😊

3. Prioritise yourself

You don’t get to where you want to be in life by constantly putting your needs on the back burner. You have to set boundaries around your time and energy and protect space in your schedule for the things that matter to you. A lot of people go wrong here because they think they don’t have time for their development when just a few minutes a day can make a massive difference. I send a weekly -Self-development email called The Check-in which includes coaching exercises, support tools, audio guides, hints and tips and so much more. I cover a different theme each week but every one can be done in 15 minutes or less so it’s a great way for busy women to make themselves more of a priority. You can sign up to get your copy for free here https://www.youfirstcoach.co.uk/thecheckin

4. Work on your mindset

“Whether you think you can, or you think you can’t – you’re right”.

You’ve probably heard this quote by Henry Ford before. Turns out Henry knew what he was talking about and a whole lot of research has proven that our mindset directly impacts our level of success.

The concept of a growth mindset vs. a fixed mindset was developed by a psychologist named Carol Dweck Mindset - Updated Edition: Changing The Way You think To Fulfil Your Potential

If you don’t know what I mean by this I would suggest doing some more reading as developing a growth mindset is essential for success. A great way to start working on your mindset is by raising your awareness around how you speak to yourself. Your thoughts create your feelings, your feelings create your actions and your actions create your results.

I wrote an article for Women in Business Society where I shared exactly how you can transform the way you speak to yourself - read it here

5. Find like-minded people

Not everyone has caught up yet and you’re probably going to encounter some eye rolls and sniggers when you talk and your Self-development journey but don’t worry, they’re not your people. There are PLENTY of other people that are interested in spending time on becoming the best versions of themselves and creating a life that they are excited to wake up to, so find them and hang out with them instead. Being surrounded by people who lift you up, believe in you, motivate and inspire you feels incredible. Don’t take my word for it, come along to one of my free workshops, click here to be the first to know about when the next one is Free Workshops | You First Coaching or you can join my insta community https://www.instagram.com/youfirstcoach/where I share Self-development content daily.

6. Swap scrolling for Self-development books

We live in a connected world which is amazing but now more than ever we need to be mindful around what we let into our consciousness. Be honest, how many hours a day do you waste observing the lives of others on the internet? If you invested that time into taking action in your own life, imagine how different your life could be?! There’s an abundance of Self-development books out there for you to get your hands on but my personal favourite is The Success Principles by Jack Canfield.

7. Get comfortable with failing.

If you want a different outcome in life you need to be prepared to take different actions. The thing that keeps many people stuck, small and scared to leave their comfort zone is fear of failure. It’s so much easier to stay where you are doing things the way that you’re used to doing them than put yourself out there and be brave. Trust me when I say, nothing good ever comes from a comfort zone. You have to reframe the way you view failure and instead of seeing it as something terrible to be avoided at all costs, see it as an opportunity to learn and improve. Failing forwards and failing fast is where progress happens.

Ok, I said 7 but come on, I couldn’t leave this one off.

8. Get a coach.

Here are some of the many reasons why my Self-development Coaching is much more effective at helping my clients to achieve their goals than if they were to do it alone;

  • Investing means they’ve got ‘skin in the game’ and a real sense of commitment like never before. They’ve invested the money that they’ve worked hard for, they’re not about to waste it so they go ALL IN and do the work needed to get the results they desire.

  • Hiring me means they have someone in their life whose sole role is to help them to achieve their goal. For the first time in forever, it's all about them and they have the time and headspace to focus on what they truly need without interruption or distraction of having to meet the needs of others.

  • I create a non-judgemental space allowing them to tap into what matters to them, unpack what’s stopped them from getting there so far and make a plan of action that means they finally get to where they want to be.

  • Access to my dedicated support and unwavering encouragement every step of the way means they are much less likely to give up when times get tough, as they may have done before.

  • Saying it out loud, writing it down, making a plan and having me holding them accountable for every single action they agree to take means that they move forward and do the hard stuff and make the progress.
